The Emperor's New Clothes

A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula

The Emperor's New Clothes is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts Hans Christian Andersen's satirical fairy tale for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 1,563 words and 317 headwords — one of the longer texts in the series — so a beginner can enjoy a sharp, funny story in English.

At a glance

An emperor loves new clothes more than his people or his work, and two cheats arrive with an offer: magic cloth that only wise people can see. The emperor sees nothing, his old minister sees nothing, but everyone is afraid to look foolish — so everyone says "How fine!" It is a Level 1 · A1 reader about pride and fear, heading toward a grand parade and one question: Will anyone say the truth?

How it teaches

Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence stands next to the picture that shows it. When the text says "They sew with no thread" and the panel shows two cheats moving their hands carefully over an empty loom, the reader gets the joke and the words at the same moment. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): language paired with images is easier to understand and remember.

The adaptation uses 317 headwords across 1,563 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Clothing and feeling words — robe, cloth, clothes, afraid, proud, foolish, wise — are shown again and again, and the gap between what people see and what they say drives the humour.

The story is built on a contradiction that pictures show perfectly, which makes comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) both easy and fun. The reader sees the empty loom and then reads "It is beautiful" — and understands not only the words but the irony. That kind of understanding keeps an adult reader smiling and reading.

Who it is for

This edition is written for adults and older teens. It is a satire about vanity, fear of looking foolish and the courage to tell the truth — ideas that speak directly to adult life at work and in society. The art is bright and theatrical; the emperor's parade is handled with care and nothing is graphic, so it works in class.

The adaptation keeps Andersen's structure: the vain emperor, the two cheats, the empty looms, the frightened minister, the mirror and the parade.

It suits self-learners who enjoy humour and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete classic that invites discussion about honesty and social pressure.

Compared with traditional graded readers

Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers offer respected adaptations across many levels, some with audio and teacher support — a natural choice for a long programme.

The Emperor's New Clothes stands out at the first level: a full-colour comic in which images carry the joke and the meaning, an adult satirical tone, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a funny, clever story and a longer text at A1. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.
