Pinocchio
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
Pinocchio is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts Carlo Collodi's classic for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 1,280 words and 322 headwords, so a beginner can follow a famous journey from wood to real life in English.
At a glance
Geppetto, an old woodcarver who lives alone, makes a wooden puppet boy and calls him Pinocchio — and by magic the puppet can walk and talk. But Pinocchio runs away, sells his school book, is tricked by a sly fox and cat, and discovers that every lie makes his nose grow; a blue fairy teaches him the value of truth. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader about honesty and courage, and it leads to one great question: Can Pinocchio be brave enough to save his father?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence sits next to the image that shows it. When the text says "His nose grows long" and the panel shows the wooden nose stretching across the frame, the reader understands — and remembers — at once. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words stored with pictures are easier to understand and remember.
The adaptation uses 322 headwords across 1,280 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Moral words — good, bad, true, lie, brave, kind — are shown through actions, so the reader learns their meaning from what Pinocchio does, not from definitions.
The growing nose is one of the best-known images in children's literature, and it makes comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) effortless. The picture tells the reader whether Pinocchio is lying before the words do, so the short dialogue is always clear.
Who it is for
This edition is written for adults and older teens. Collodi's story is darker and stranger than many people remember — tricks, danger, a toy island where lazy boys grow donkey ears, and a giant fish — and the adaptation keeps that adventurous edge. Nothing is graphic, so it works in class.
The adaptation keeps the key episodes: Geppetto's workshop, the talking cricket, the sold school book, the fox and the cat, the blue fairy, the toy island and the giant fish. Readers who know the story will enjoy recognising it; those who don't will discover a classic.
It suits self-learners who want a well-known story with adventure and heart, and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete text for extensive reading and discussion about honesty.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers offer respected adaptations across many levels, some with audio and teaching support — a natural choice for a long programme.
This Pinocchio stands out at the first level: a full-colour comic where images carry the meaning, an original visual design, an adult tone, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a famous classic with adventure and reads more confidently with pictures. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. Pinocchio by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, this comic book graded reader adapts Collodi's classic in 1,280 words and 322 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that carry the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a famous adventure about honesty whose most important moments — like the growing nose — are shown in pictures, so a true beginner understands every page and finishes the whole book in English.
