The Pied Piper of Hamelin

A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula

The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts the old German legend for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 1,366 words and 296 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete, haunting tale about a broken promise in English.

At a glance

The old town of Hamelin is full of rats — in the food, in the houses, everywhere — until a tall stranger in a colourful patched coat arrives with a wooden pipe and a deal: he will take the rats away for gold. The mayor says yes, the music leads every rat to the river, and then the greedy mayor laughs and pays nothing. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader with a chilling turn, and it asks: What will the town pay to make it right?

How it teaches

Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence stands beside the image that shows it. When the text says "Every rat follows the music" and the panel shows a river of rats marching behind the piper, the reader understands at once. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words stored with pictures are easier to understand and remember.

The adaptation uses 296 headwords across 1,366 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Town and money words — town, mayor, people, gold, pay, promise — return throughout, and the key verb follow is shown twice in two very different scenes, which fixes it in memory.

The mayor's broken word is a clear moment of comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). The reader sees the laugh, the empty hand and the piper's cold eyes before a single word is read, so the short line "You gave your word" lands with full meaning. The learner is following a moral drama, not a grammar lesson.

Who it is for

This edition is written for adults and older teens. It is a story about greed, responsibility and the cost of a lie told by people in power — themes adults recognise. The art is atmospheric; the second song is eerie but never graphic, so the book works in class.

The adaptation keeps the legend's shape: the plague of rats, the stranger's offer, the magical music, the mayor's betrayal and the piper's answer. Its warning about keeping promises is as strong as ever.

It suits self-learners who like legends with a dark edge, and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete classic that invites discussion about honesty and fairness.

Compared with traditional graded readers

Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers offer respected adaptations across many levels, some with audio and teacher support — a natural choice for a long programme.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin stands out at the first level: a full-colour comic in which images carry the meaning and the mood, an adult tone, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a legend with moral weight and reads more confidently with pictures. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.
