The Little Sea Girl
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
The Little Sea Girl is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the sea for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, with an original visual design, it tells the story in 1,346 words and 290 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete, bittersweet love story in English.
At a glance
Deep under the sea, a young sea girl lives in a coral palace with her father, the Sea King, and dreams of the bright world above; on her birthday she swims to the surface, sees a young prince on a ship and saves him from a storm. To reach him she goes to the old sea witch, who gives her legs but takes her voice — now she can walk on land, but she cannot speak, and the prince will soon marry another woman. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader of love and sacrifice, ending on one question: What will the little sea girl choose?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence sits next to the image that shows it. When the text says "She holds the prince" and the panel shows her pulling him through high gray waves toward the sand, the reader understands the words and the courage together. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): language paired with pictures is easier to understand and remember.
The adaptation uses 290 headwords across 1,346 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Two worlds give the vocabulary its shape — sea / land, under / above, swim / walk, voice / silence — and the colour of each page tells the reader where the story is.
A heroine without a voice makes this book a striking example of comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). Once she cannot speak, her feelings are carried entirely by her face and actions, and the short narration simply names what the reader already sees. The learner reads emotion first and language second — and understands both.
Who it is for
This edition is written for adults and older teens. Andersen's original is a story of longing, sacrifice and unspoken love, far deeper than many retellings, and this adaptation respects that tone. The art is rich and original; nothing is graphic, so the book works in class.
The adaptation keeps Andersen's key moments: the coral palace, the birthday journey upward, the storm, the rescue, the bargain with the sea witch, the lost voice and the prince's coming wedding.
It suits self-learners who want an emotional classic, and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete text for extensive reading and discussion about choice and sacrifice.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers provide respected adaptations over many levels, some with audio and teacher resources — a natural choice for a long course.
The Little Sea Girl stands out at the first level: a full-colour comic in which the images carry emotion and meaning, an adult tone faithful to Andersen, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a deeper, bittersweet classic and reads more confidently with pictures. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. The Little Sea Girl by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, this comic book graded reader adapts Andersen's fairy tale in 1,346 words and 290 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that carry the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a deep, bittersweet love story in which the pictures carry the heroine's silent feelings, so a true beginner understands every page and finishes a whole book in English.
