The Star Watcher
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
The Star Watcher is an original science fiction story told as a full-colour comic book graded reader for adult beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Created by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells a cosmic, emotional story in 1,371 words and 337 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete journey from the desert to the stars in English.
At a glance
Leo lives alone in the desert with a metal telescope and an old radio; every night his sister Mara calls and says "Come home, Leo", and every night he answers "Soon." Then a blue meteor falls in the mountains, and inside the crater he finds a huge gray ship whose door closes behind him — and a voice that says only he can help. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader for adults and older teens, about wonder, duty and home, with one question at its heart: What will Leo lose if he says yes?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every sentence stands next to the image that shows it. When the text says "The lights pulse blue" and the panel shows old gray metal with new blue light running through it, the reader understands without translating. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): language paired with images is easier to understand and remember.
The story uses 337 headwords across 1,371 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Sky and space words — star, sky, night, light, ship, planet — are drawn on almost every page, so they become familiar through sight.
The phone calls with Mara are comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) in its most human form. The same short exchange — "Come home, Leo." / "Soon." — returns across the story, and each time the reader understands more of what it means. Simple words carry deep feeling because the pictures and the context give them weight.
Who it is for
The Star Watcher is written for adults and teenagers. Its hero is a 30-year-old man torn between a great purpose and the family who loves him; its themes are loneliness, sacrifice and belonging. The tone is quiet, cosmic and moving, and nothing is graphic, so it is suitable for class.
Original science fiction is rare in graded readers, which are mostly retold classics. Here the reader discovers the ship's purpose step by step with Leo, and that sense of discovery carries a beginner through a whole book in English.
It suits self-learners who love space stories and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete, emotional text for extensive reading at A1.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers are respected series with many levels and, in some editions, audio and teaching support — a natural choice for a long programme.
The Star Watcher stands out at the beginner level: a full-colour comic in which the images carry the wonder and the meaning, an original adult story, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a cosmic, emotional science fiction story and reads more confidently with pictures. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. The Star Watcher by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it is an original science fiction comic book graded reader told in 1,371 words and 337 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that carry the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a moving, adult space story about duty and home, written at true beginner level, so the learner reads for Leo's choice and finishes a whole book in English.
